Bedford

Bedford is an ancient market town in the heart of Bedfordshire, England, nestled on the banks of the River Great Ouse. A Saxon settlement existed here long before 914, when King Edward the Elder recaptured it from the Danes. A fortress was built in 919, though the Danes soon destroyed it, and the Norman castle erected by William II stood until its destruction in 1224. Today only Castle Mound remains as a silent witness to the town’s medieval past.

Medieval Bedford quickly rose in prominence: Henry II granted it borough status in 1166, and it has held parliamentary representation since 1265. For centuries the town thrived on wool and lace, with the River Ouse turning it into a vital commercial hub. The historic core still retains the character of its market-town origins, even as modern life flows through its streets.

In more recent centuries Bedford became known as the home of John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim's Progress, who preached in a local barn and served imprisonment here. The 20th century brought a wave of Italian immigrants drawn to the Stewartby brickworks, giving the town a cosmopolitan flavour that persists today across 57 ethnic communities. In 2023 global attention turned to Bedford once again when Universal announced plans for a major theme park on the town’s outskirts, set to open by 2031.
