Gusau is the capital of Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria and an important administrative and commercial center. The town originated as a small farming settlement and gradually expanded because of its strategic location along regional trade routes connecting different parts of northern Nigeria.
During the era of the Sokoto Caliphate and later under British colonial administration, Gusau strengthened its position as a center of governance and commerce. In 1996, when Zamfara State was established, the city became the state capital, leading to rapid development of public infrastructure and government institutions.
Today, Gusau is a growing urban center with a diverse economy based on agriculture, trade, and public administration. The city preserves its rich Hausa cultural traditions while continuing to modernize and expand as one of the leading cities in northwestern Nigeria.
