Ikeja is a major urban center located northwest of Lagos city and serves as the capital of Lagos State in southwestern Nigeria. Although the Awori people had settled the area long before the 20th century, Ikeja's formal development began in the early 1900s when the Lagos–Ibadan railway opened in 1901, transforming it into an agricultural hinterland for the booming port of Lagos. An industrial estate was established in the mid-1960s, and in 1976 Ikeja was officially designated the state capital, shifting the administrative center away from Lagos Island.
Today, Ikeja stands as a vital economic and transportation hub. It hosts the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria's busiest airport, and the famous Computer Village, one of the largest technology markets in Africa. The Ikeja City Mall is the biggest shopping complex on the Lagos mainland, drawing thousands of visitors daily. The area has evolved into a bustling commercial district with numerous corporate headquarters, hotels, and entertainment venues.
The residents of Ikeja are predominantly Yoruba, though the city is cosmopolitan, attracting people from across Nigeria and beyond. Compared to other parts of Lagos, Ikeja is relatively well-planned, with better road networks and residential estates. It offers a mix of government reservation areas, modern housing, schools, and healthcare facilities, making it one of the most desirable places to live in the greater Lagos metropolis.
