Ikere-Ekiti

Nigeria

Ikere Ekiti is a historic city located in Ekiti State, southwestern Nigeria. According to tradition, the town was founded around the 11th century by Aladeselu, a migrant from the Benin Kingdom, though some accounts attribute its origins to Oloje from Ile-Ife. The name "Ikere" derives from "Ile-Okere" (Land of Squirrels), inspired by the abundance of squirrels found when the first settlers cleared the bush. The city's history is marked by a unique blend of Benin and Ile-Ife influences, alongside a distinctive monarchical system headed by the Ogoga.

By the 19th century, Ikere Ekiti had established itself as a formidable agricultural and trading center, particularly for cocoa and yams. The town gained a reputation as an unconquered fortress, with many neighboring communities seeking refuge within its walls during regional conflicts. Its economy thrived on farming, while the annual Olosunta Festival became a cornerstone of cultural identity, honoring the deity associated with the town's spiritual heritage.

Today, Ikere Ekiti has an estimated population of approximately 183,152 (as of 2022) and the local government area spans about 202 square kilometers. The city is home to government and Christian teacher-training colleges, as well as a hospital, serving as an educational and healthcare hub for the region. Agriculture remains vital, with palm oil, cassava, and cocoa continuing to drive local commerce and sustenance.
