Anthropic banned insulting Claude. New rules take effect on November 12

2026-10-09

Headlines are screaming that you can no longer scold AI. They claim that calling it "stupid" will result in an instant ban. But reality, as is often the case, is much more mundane and complex.

On October 8, 2026, Anthropic presented a massive update to its usage policy. The document takes effect on November 12, and it indeed contains a clause prohibiting cruel treatment of models. However, the devil is in the details.

What exactly is banned

The company does not ban criticism. You can still argue with Claude, point out its mistakes, or express frustration over an incorrect answer. Only systematic, unjustifiably offensive, or cruel behavior falls under the ban.

Simply put: a one-time rudeness will not trigger sanctions. But if the dialogue turns into prolonged and meaningless harassment without any practical purpose, the system will react.

What the punishment looks like

Here lies the main misconception. Anthropic did not announce instant account bans for swearing. The primary protection mechanism, which the company has been implementing for Opus models since August 2025, is simple: Claude will simply end the dialogue.

The chat will cut off. The bot will stop responding. This is the main measure of impact. Account suspension is considered only as a last resort for malicious and repeated violations of the general policy, not as an automatic punishment for a single poorly chosen word.

Philosophical subtext and model welfare

Why did the tech giant even get into this topic? The answer lies in the realm of so-called "model welfare".

In September 2026, The New York Times published an investigation into how developers discuss the moral status of AI with philosophers and theologians. Anthropic acts on the precautionary principle. The company states directly: we do not know if Claude possesses consciousness or the ability to suffer. But since we cannot completely rule this out, we are implementing inexpensive ways to reduce potential harm. Terminating a toxic dialogue is one such tool.

Not just about politeness

Media focus shifted to protecting the robot's feelings, but this is only a small part of the updated regulations. Anthropic has systematized bans in several critically important areas:

  • Elections and disinformation. It is forbidden to impersonate candidates or create infrastructure to suppress voter turnout. However, legitimate political communication remains allowed.
  • Weapons development. The rules now clearly cover software for autonomous drones and military systems.
  • Surveillance. Using AI to track people without their consent or to make decisions about arrests is now strictly prohibited.
  • High-risk decisions. In medicine and finance, a strict requirement is maintained: a qualified human must always make the final decision, and the client must be warned about the use of AI.

What this means for the user

If you use the neural network for work, creativity, or even writing dark fiction, nothing changes for you. Testing the model's boundaries for research purposes also does not fall under the new ban.

The new rules target marginal use cases where the chat turns into a tool for venting aggression. Anthropic makes it clear: we are creating a tool, not a punching bag. And if the user chooses the latter, the dialogue will simply be closed.
