Birnin Kebbi

Birnin Kebbi is the capital city of Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria. It was originally settled by the Kabawa, a Hausa subgroup, before being captured around 1516 by the legendary warrior Muhammadu Koral Kanta, who founded the powerful Kebbi Kingdom. Around 1700, the king of Kebbi moved the capital from Surame to Birnin Kebbi, establishing it as the political and commercial heart of the kingdom.

In 1805, the town was burned during the Fulani jihad and subsequently incorporated into the Gwandu Emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate. Later, in 1906, it became the headquarters of the Gwandu Emirate. After decades as a provincial town, Kebbi State was created in 1991, and Birnin Kebbi was chosen as the capital of the new state. This transformation spurred rapid commercial and infrastructural development, attracting people from across Nigeria.

Today, Birnin Kebbi serves as a major market and agricultural collection center, particularly for rice, groundnuts, millet, fish, and livestock. The city is home to Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic and a government rice research station. It is also served by the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, facilitating air travel and trade. The majority of residents are Hausa and Fulani Muslims, with a growing community of traders and civil servants from various parts of the country.
