Ikom

Ikom is a town in eastern Cross River State, southeastern Nigeria. It was founded in the early 20th century as a railway station and trading post during the colonial era. The town lies on the route connecting Calabar to northeastern Nigeria, which made it a natural collection point for agricultural produce and timber.

Ikom enjoys a favourable climate and fertile soil, allowing the cultivation of coffee, cocoa and fruit crops. In the 1970s, the Ikom Monoliths were designated as a special heritage site, drawing the attention of historians from around the world. This gave the town a unique reputation as a cultural landmark.

Today Ikom continues to serve as an agricultural and commercial centre for the region. The town is a hub for coffee and cocoa exports to foreign markets. It is home to diverse communities, particularly the Yakurr and Ejagham peoples, who coexist in harmony.
