Umuahia

Umuahia

Nigeria

Umuahia is the capital of Abia State in southeastern Nigeria. Its name traces back to the Igbo phrase Ama Ahia, meaning "marketplace." Long before British colonisation, the area functioned as a bustling regional trade hub where merchants gathered to exchange palm oil, textiles, pottery and traditional crafts. In the early 1900s, the colonial administration established a railway station here along the Port Harcourt–Enugu line, transforming Umuahia into a vital transit point for agricultural produce and cattle heading to coastal ports.

During the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), Umuahia became the second — and ultimately longest-serving — capital of the secessionist Republic of Biafra after Enugu fell to federal troops. The city saw fierce fighting; in April 1969 Nigerian forces briefly occupied it before being pushed back by Biafran troops. It was not until 24 December 1969 that federal forces finally captured Umuahia, prompting Biafra's government to relocate to Owerri.

When Abia State was carved out of Imo State in 1991, Umuahia was named its capital. Today the city comprises five kindred clans — Ibeku, Ohuhu, Olokoro, Ubakala and Umuopara — and remains a key administrative and agricultural centre, home to breweries, palm-oil processing plants, the National Root Crops Research Institute and the Federal Medical Centre.
