Lafia

Lafia is the capital and largest city of Nasarawa State, located in north-central Nigeria. It was founded in the late 18th century by Muhammadu Dunama on the site of a small Koro (Migili) village called Anane. By the early 19th century, Lafia had grown into a prominent chiefdom, and during the reign of Mohamman Agwai (1881–1903), its market became one of the most important trading centers in the Benue Valley. In 1903, the British colonial authorities recognized Chief Musa as the first emir of Lafia.

Over time, Lafia evolved into a significant political and commercial hub. When Nasarawa State was created in 1996, Lafia was chosen as its capital, triggering rapid infrastructural and administrative growth. Today, the city is home to several higher institutions, including the Federal University of Lafia and the Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic. Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of sesame seeds and soybeans, along with traditional cotton weaving and dyeing, remains central to the local economy.

Lafia has an estimated population of about 509,300 as of 2021 and covers a Local Government Area of approximately 2,827 square kilometers. The city is inhabited by a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including the Kanuri, Alago, Eggon, Tiv, and Hausa. The traditional institution of the Emir of Lafia continues to play an important role in preserving local customs and maintaining social harmony.
