Jos

Jos stands as the capital of Plateau State in Nigeria's North-Central geopolitical zone. Long before colonial surveyors arrived, the land was home to indigenous communities such as the Berom, Anaguta, and Afizere peoples, who cultivated the highlands and raised livestock. Two ancient settlements, Gwash and Naraguta, occupied the area that would eventually become the modern city. In the early 1900s, British explorers discovered vast deposits of cassiterite—tin ore—in the surrounding hills, prompting the formal establishment of Jos as an organized township in 1915. The name itself is thought to be a colonial adaptation of indigenous words like "Gwosh" or "Jot" used by the earliest inhabitants.

The discovery of tin transformed Jos into one of the most rapidly growing urban centers in West Africa. By 1914, the Bauchi Light Railway had been constructed to transport ore from Jos to Zaria and onward to coastal ports, linking the plateau to global markets. The mining boom attracted a wave of migrants from across Nigeria and beyond, including Hausa traders, Igbo merchants, Yoruba laborers, and European engineers, giving the city its famously cosmopolitan character. When Benue-Plateau State was created in 1967, Jos was chosen as its capital, retaining that status when Plateau State was carved out in 1976. For decades it was known as the "Tin City," supplying a significant portion of the world's tin during the mid-20th century.

Today, Jos is a metropolis of roughly one million people, renowned for its temperate climate at an elevation exceeding 1,200 meters above sea level. The city hosts the University of Jos, founded in 1975, the National Museum showcasing Nok terracotta artifacts dating back over 2,000 years, and numerous wildlife parks. Although the early 2000s brought severe ethno-religious tensions, Jos remains a vital administrative, educational, and commercial hub, often described as a miniature Nigeria because of its remarkable ethnic diversity.
