Україна

Cherkasy is an old city on the right bank of the Dnipro River, with a history going back at least to the 13th century. The official founding year is traditionally given as 1286, while the earliest written record describing the city dates to 1305. Its position near the southern frontier of medieval and Lithuanian territories made it an important defensive settlement before it gradually became associated with the development of the Cossack communities of the central Dnipro region.

From the 14th to the 16th century, Cherkasy belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and served as a frontier stronghold. Its inhabitants were involved in campaigns against Tatar raids, and during the 16th century the city became an important center of the early Cossack movement. A new castle was built there between 1549 and 1552, becoming one of the main points around which the town developed.

In later centuries, Cherkasy gradually shifted from a military outpost toward a commercial and industrial city. The 20th century brought wars, revolutions, and major social and economic transformations, followed by extensive urban development after World War II. Today, Cherkasy is the administrative center of Cherkasy Oblast and an important industrial, educational, and cultural city of central Ukraine.
