Lutsk

Lutsk is one of Ukraine's oldest cities, with its first written mention dating back to 1085. Located at the crossroads of major trade routes, it quickly developed into an important political and economic center of Volhynia. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Lutsk served as the capital of the Volhynian Principality and played a key regional role.

From the 14th to the 16th century, the city belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. During this era, the impressive Lutsk Castle was strengthened and became the city's best-known landmark. In 1429, Lutsk hosted the famous Congress of European Monarchs, where rulers discussed political cooperation and security in Central and Eastern Europe.

After the partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century, Lutsk became part of the Russian Empire. The city experienced both World Wars during the 20th century before becoming part of independent Ukraine in 1991. Today, Lutsk is the administrative center of Volyn Oblast, celebrated for its medieval heritage, historic monuments, and vibrant cultural scene.
