Mykolaiv

Україна

Mykolaiv was founded in 1789 in southern Ukraine on the orders of Prince Grigory Potemkin, shortly after the Russo-Turkish War. The settlement was established as a center of shipbuilding and naval activity at the meeting point of the Inhul and Southern Buh rivers. From its earliest years, the city's development was closely connected with ships, waterways, and maritime trade.

During the 19th century, Mykolaiv grew into one of the major shipbuilding centers of the Black Sea region. Naval and commercial vessels were constructed here, while the port, industry, and urban infrastructure expanded. Its position near the Black Sea also encouraged international trade and helped transform Mykolaiv into an important industrial city.

The 20th century brought revolutions, wars, occupation, and reconstruction. During the Soviet period, shipbuilding remained the foundation of the local economy, making Mykolaiv one of Ukraine's leading centers of the industry. Today, the city remains an important port and industrial center, with its identity strongly shaped by shipbuilding, rivers, and its connection to the Black Sea.
