Poltava

Poltava is one of the oldest cities in central Ukraine, with a history dating back at least to the 12th century. Located along the Vorskla River, it occupied a strategically important position in the central Dnieper region. Over time, its favorable location helped Poltava develop into a center of trade, crafts, and regional administration.

The city's history is strongly associated with the Battle of Poltava in 1709, fought between the army of Swedish King Charles XII and the forces of Tsar Peter I of Moscow. The battle became a turning point in the Great Northern War and had a lasting impact on the political history of the region. During the following centuries, Poltava continued to grow and emerged in the 19th century as an important cultural and educational center.

The 20th century brought revolutions, wars, occupation, and reconstruction. Poltava suffered considerable destruction during World War II but was rebuilt afterward. Today, it is the administrative center of Poltava Oblast and an important hub of education, culture, industry, and tourism, known for its historic landmarks and strong literary traditions.
