Sumy

Sumy was founded in 1655 as a fortified settlement on the banks of the Psel, Sumka, and Strelka rivers. The town emerged during the development of Sloboda Ukraine and gradually became an important defensive and trading center. Its favorable location encouraged the growth of crafts, fairs, and local commerce.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Sumy developed into a significant economic center of the region. Trade and industry expanded rapidly, while sugar production became especially important in the 19th century, supported by influential local entrepreneurial families. The arrival of the railway further strengthened the city's economic role and helped modernize its urban infrastructure.

The 20th century brought revolutions, wars, the Soviet period, and major changes in the city's industrial life. During World War II, Sumy was occupied and suffered considerable damage and loss, followed by a long period of reconstruction. Today, Sumy is the administrative center of Sumy Oblast and an important educational, cultural, and industrial city in northeastern Ukraine.
