Uzhhorod

Uzhhorod is one of the oldest cities in western Ukraine, with a history stretching back more than a thousand years. The first written references date to the 9th century, when it was already an important fortified settlement. Located on the Uzh River near the Carpathian mountain passes, the city developed into a key center for trade and defense.

Throughout its history, Uzhhorod belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, the Habsburg Monarchy, Austria-Hungary, and later Czechoslovakia. Each historical period contributed to the city's unique architecture and multicultural character. Uzhhorod Castle, centuries-old churches, and the preserved old town reflect its diverse cultural heritage.

After World War II, Uzhhorod became part of the Ukrainian SSR, and since 1991 it has served as the administrative center of Zakarpattia Oblast in independent Ukraine. Today, the city is an important cultural, educational, and tourist destination, famous for its historic streets, scenic riverfront, and location near several European borders.
