Zaporizhzhia

Zaporizhzhia is one of the most important cities in southeastern Ukraine, with a history closely connected to the Zaporizhian Cossacks. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, but it gained special significance in the 16th century when the strongholds of the Zaporizhian Sich appeared beyond the Dnipro rapids. From this region, the Cossacks defended Ukrainian lands and played a major role in regional history.

After the dissolution of the Zaporizhian Sich in the late 18th century, a new city began to emerge. In 1770, the Aleksandrovsk Fortress was established, and a settlement gradually developed around it into a major industrial center. During the 20th century, the construction of the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station and the growth of heavy industry transformed Zaporizhzhia into one of Ukraine's leading industrial cities.

World War II brought occupation and extensive destruction, but the city was rebuilt during the post-war years. Since Ukraine's independence, Zaporizhzhia has remained a key center of industry, energy, science, and education. Today, the city is famous for Khortytsia Island, its Cossack heritage, powerful industries, and scenic views of the Dnipro River.
