Zhytomyr

Zhytomyr is one of Ukraine's oldest cities, with a history that dates back to the 9th century. According to a traditional legend, it was founded by a warrior named Zhytomyr, whose name later became the city's own. Its position along important trade routes helped the settlement grow into a major center of commerce, crafts, and regional defense.

In the 14th century, Zhytomyr became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later joined the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth after the Union of Lublin. Over the following centuries, the city experienced wars, fires, and political changes, yet it remained an important administrative and cultural center of Volhynia. At the end of the 18th century, it was incorporated into the Russian Empire.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Zhytomyr expanded through industrial growth, improved transportation, and the development of education. The city suffered serious damage during World War II but was rebuilt in the years that followed. Today, Zhytomyr serves as the administrative center of Zhytomyr Oblast and is known for its historic architecture, cultural heritage, and steady modernization.
