Abia

Nigeria

Abia State is located in southeastern Nigeria and is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people. Long before the creation of the modern state, the region was home to independent Igbo communities that thrived through agriculture, craftsmanship, and regional trade. Traditional markets connected villages and encouraged economic growth across the area for centuries.

During British colonial rule, the territory became part of Nigeria's Eastern Region and experienced significant political and economic changes. After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the area was deeply affected by the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), as much of the conflict took place within the former Eastern Region. The post-war years focused on reconstruction and the revival of commerce.

Abia State was officially created on 27 August 1991 from the former Imo State. Since then, it has developed into one of Nigeria's leading commercial and industrial states, with the city of Aba earning a national reputation for manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and vibrant local markets.
