Dutse is the capital and largest city of Jigawa State in northwestern Nigeria. Its name comes from the Hausa word for "rock," referring to the distinctive rocky hills that encircle the town. The settlement's history stretches back to at least the 15th century, as it is mentioned in the Kano Chronicle under Sarkin Kano Abdullahi Burja (1438–1452). In 1801, Fulani clans from Borno arrived in the area, and by 1806 they had established their ascendancy after answering the call of Usman dan Fodio. Dutse remained under Kano Emirate authority until the British conquest of 1903, after which it was incorporated into the colonial district-head system.
In August 1991, Jigawa State was carved out of the old Kano State, and Dutse was chosen as the capital of the new entity. This designation triggered rapid development, with the construction of government complexes, schools, and the Federal University Dutse in 2011. The city is economically significant for agriculture and livestock, particularly date palm cultivation, millet, and sorghum. The surrounding rocks give the landscape a dramatic character and have inspired local building traditions.
Today, Dutse is linked by major trunk roads to Kano, Bauchi, and Yobe States. It hosts a cement industry that exploits local limestone deposits. With a projected population of 431,800 as of 2022, the city continues to serve as the political and economic engine of northwestern Nigeria. Its population is predominantly Hausa and Fulani, and Islam is the dominant faith, reflecting the deep Islamic heritage of the region.
