Jalingo is the capital of Taraba State in northeastern Nigeria and serves as the state's administrative and commercial center. The settlement grew from small farming communities established by local ethnic groups, whose fertile surroundings supported agriculture, livestock rearing, and regional trade for generations.
During the British colonial period, Jalingo gradually developed as a local administrative station. Its importance increased significantly in 1991 when Taraba State was created and Jalingo was designated as the state capital. This decision encouraged investment in public infrastructure, education, and government institutions.
Today, Jalingo is a fast-growing city known for its cultural diversity and welcoming atmosphere. Modern development continues alongside traditional customs, while the city remains an important gateway to the scenic landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Taraba State.
