Kumo

Kumo is a town in northeastern Nigeria and serves as the administrative headquarters of Akko Local Government Area in Gombe State. It lies roughly 40 kilometres southeast of Gombe city along the Gombe–Yola road corridor. Its history stretches back to the early 19th century when the Gombe Emirate was founded in 1804, and Kumo emerged as a local trading post within that realm. In 1991, the Akko Local Government Area was formally created, designating Kumo as its capital. Today, the town is a cosmopolitan community of more than thirty ethnic groups, with the Fulani forming the majority alongside Tangale, Tera, Hausa, and smaller minorities.

Kumo holds considerable importance as the state's second-largest commercial center after Gombe city. Major markets such as Tike, Babbar Kusawa, and Tashar Gwari draw thousands of traders dealing in groundnuts, cotton, maize, and sesame. The town is also the seat of the Akko Emirate Council, recognized as a First-Class Emirate in Gombe State. Politically, Kumo is divided into four wards — Kumo East, Kumo West, Kumo Centre, and Lambi (Kumo North) — making it the most populous bloc within Akko LGA.

In contemporary times, Kumo faces environmental challenges, notably severe gully erosion, which the state government is addressing through engineering works and reforestation. The LGA boasts nearly one hundred secondary schools, highlighting a strong educational presence. The Gombe–Yola highway keeps the town well connected to the broader region. With a population exceeding 150,000, Kumo continues to serve as a vibrant melting pot that exemplifies communal harmony across Nigeria's diverse ethnic landscape.
