Gombe

Gombe is a major city in northeastern Nigeria and serves as the capital of Gombe State. In 1804, Buba Yero, a disciple of the Fulani Islamic reformer Usman dan Fodio, established the Gombe Emirate. Around 1824, the emirate headquarters was set up at a place called Gambe, later renamed Gombe Aba in 1841. Following religious conflicts and British colonial expansion in the 1880s, the capital was relocated to Nafada in 1913 and then to Doma in 1919, which was subsequently renamed Gombe. This sequence of moves positioned the town as the administrative and commercial heart of the region.

During the colonial period, Gombe evolved into an economic hub for agriculture and livestock. The opening of the railway in 1963 significantly boosted its trade in groundnuts and cotton. In the early 1970s, limestone deposits near the city spurred the construction of a cement factory at Ashaka. The town also hosts a national technical teacher-training college and an Arabic teacher-training college, underscoring the educational aspirations of its residents.

In 1996, the creation of Gombe State elevated the city to its present status as state capital. Today, it is served by the Gombe Lawanti International Airport and lies on the national railway network. With an estimated population of roughly half a million, Gombe is home to diverse ethnic groups including the Fulani, Hausa, Tangale, and Tera. It continues to function as a vital center of unity, commerce, and governance in Nigeria's northeast.
