Asaba is the capital of Delta State in south-western Nigeria. It was founded in 1884 as a trading post of the Royal Niger Company on the banks of the Niger River. In the early 1900s, Britain took direct control and made Asaba an administrative centre for the region. In 1991, when Delta State was created, Asaba was chosen as the capital of the new state.
Asaba's history is intertwined with commerce and politics. During the Nigerian Civil War, Asaba became infamous for the Asaba massacre of October 1967, in which Biafran troops killed many Igbo civilians. This remains one of the darkest episodes of the war.
Today Asaba has grown into an economic and political hub of Delta State. It hosts Delta State University, Asaba International Airport and major hotels. The city enjoys a pleasant climate and has good transport links to Lagos and other major cities.
