Onitsha

Nigeria

Onitsha is a major city in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, founded in 1550 by migrants fleeing the Benin Kingdom. These refugees were led by Eze Chima, who established a new political order along the eastern bank of the Niger River. The settlement quickly grew into a vital trading post between the northern and southern regions, as the waterway provided access to distant markets and communities. The people of Onitsha belong to the Igbo ethnic group, yet they retain cultural practices that reflect both their Benin origins and Igbo heritage.

During the early 1900s, British colonial forces established control over Onitsha, transforming it into a major administrative and commercial center for palm oil and kernel trade. After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, the city continued to expand, becoming one of the largest urban areas in southeastern Nigeria. Its famous Main Market evolved into one of the biggest markets on the African continent, drawing merchants from across West Africa. The local economy thrives on commerce, manufacturing, and transportation services.

Today, Onitsha has a population of approximately 1.45 million people within an area of about 52 square kilometers. The city maintains important river ports and road connections linking it to surrounding towns and cities. It remains a dominant economic and cultural force in Nigeria, attracting traders and entrepreneurs from every corner of the country and beyond.
