Owerri

Owerri is the capital and largest city of Imo State in southeastern Nigeria. According to Igbo oral tradition, the city was founded in the 14th century by Ekwem Oha, a hunter who fled his native settlement of Uratta following a dispute with his younger brother. He settled on a hill known as Ugwu Ekwema, which became the nucleus of the future city. His descendants later established five villages collectively called "Owere Nchi Ise," forming the foundation of modern Owerri. The site was agriculturally prized for its fertile soil between the Otamiri and Nworie rivers.

During the colonial era, British authorities designated Owerri as an administrative headquarters on 11 May 1902. The town grew into a major regional center, hosting government offices, schools, and hospitals. A dramatic chapter in its history came during the Nigerian Civil War, when Owerri became the third and final capital of the secessionist Republic of Biafra in 1969, after Enugu and Umuahia fell to federal troops. The city endured heavy bombardment before its eventual capture in early 1970.

The creation of Imo State in 1976, with Owerri as its capital, triggered rapid urbanization and infrastructural expansion. Today, the city is nicknamed the "Las Vegas of Africa" for its vibrant nightlife, luxury hotels, and leisure parks. It is home to prestigious institutions such as the Federal University of Technology Owerri and Imo State University. Owerri remains a cultural and political beacon in Igboland, blending ancient traditions with contemporary Nigerian cosmopolitanism.
