Enugu

Enugu is the capital of Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria. The modern city was founded in 1909 when British geologist Albert Ernest Kitson discovered coal beneath the Udi Hills. The colonial government quickly established the Enugu Coal Camp and built the Eastern Line railway to Port Harcourt to export the mineral. By 1917, the settlement had acquired township status as Enugwu-Ngwo, though rapid expansion led to its renaming as Enugu in 1928.

In 1929, Enugu became the administrative headquarters of the Southern Provinces, and by 1938 it was the capital of the Eastern Region. During the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), it served as the capital of the secessionist Republic of Biafra, hosting Radio Biafra until federal troops captured it in October 1967. Despite the devastation of war, Enugu retained its status as the political and cultural heart of Igboland.

Today, Enugu has a population of approximately 876,000 (2022) and covers 556 square kilometers. Known as the "Coal City," it has evolved from a mining town into a center for education, commerce, and technology, hosting universities, manufacturing plants, and a growing tech startup ecosystem.
