Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria. It was founded in 1907 by the British as a military garrison and administrative centre named Yerwa. Before British arrival, the area had been part of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, one of the great pre-colonial states of West Africa. The city was built along the Ngadda River, which gave it strategic commercial importance between the north and south.
During the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), Maiduguri served as a major federal military base in the northeast. After the war, the city grew steadily as an economic and cultural hub for the region. However, from 2009 to the present, Maiduguri has suffered heavily from Boko Haram insurgency, causing loss of life and displacing millions of residents.
Today Maiduguri remains a political and commercial centre of northeastern Nigeria. It is home to the University of Maiduguri, the National Research Institute for the Northeast, and an international airport. The city holds special significance as a coordination point for humanitarian aid and relief for internally displaced persons.
