Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers State in southern Nigeria and one of the country's leading economic centers. The city was founded in 1912 as a port to support the export of coal from the Enugu region. Its strategic position along waterways leading to the Atlantic Ocean quickly encouraged trade and urban development.
During the twentieth century, Port Harcourt expanded into a major commercial and industrial city. The discovery of petroleum in the Niger Delta transformed it into the heart of Nigeria's oil and gas industry, attracting businesses, workers, and investors from across the country and abroad.
Today, Port Harcourt is known for its busy seaport, modern infrastructure, universities, and vibrant business environment. While the city continues to grow, it also remains an important cultural center where diverse communities contribute to its dynamic character.
