Yenagoa is the capital city of Bayelsa State in southern Nigeria, located deep within the Niger Delta region. It was designated as the capital of the newly created state on 1 October 1996 when Bayelsa was carved out of Rivers State by the military government of Sani Abacha. Before this administrative elevation, Yenagoa had existed for generations as a modest settlement along the Epie Creek, where Ijaw communities and the Epie-Atissa people practiced agriculture and fishing in the surrounding waterways. The area's network of creeks and mangroves shaped both the livelihood and the cultural identity of its inhabitants.
Following its selection as state capital, Yenagoa experienced rapid urban expansion with the construction of government offices, residential estates, and road networks. In 2019 the Bayelsa Airport received its first aircraft, improving connections with the rest of the country. The city is home to Bayelsa United and Bayelsa Queens football clubs, both of which won the 2021 Aiteo Cup in their respective divisions. The economy relies heavily on government administration, commerce, and the petroleum industry, reflecting the broader resource wealth of the Niger Delta.
Today Yenagoa has an estimated population of around eight hundred thousand people spread across an area of approximately seven hundred and six square kilometers. Local languages include Epie-Atissa and several Ijaw dialects such as Ekpetiama and Gbarian. The city faces annual flooding risks due to its low-lying riverine terrain, yet it continues to serve as the political, cultural, and economic nucleus of Bayelsa State.
