Rivne is an old city in western Ukraine, first mentioned in written sources in 1283. Situated among the forests and waterways of Volhynia, it gradually developed into a local center of trade and crafts. During the medieval period, the settlement passed through the control of different principalities and states, shaping its complex historical background.
In the 14th century, Rivne became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later joined the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the 18th century, it was incorporated into the Russian Empire. The city experienced particularly strong growth during the 19th century, when trade, industry, and urban infrastructure expanded. The arrival of the railway also turned Rivne into an important transportation hub of Volhynia.
The 20th century brought major political and military upheavals. Rivne was part of Poland for a period, later experienced Soviet rule, Nazi occupation, and postwar reconstruction. After Ukraine became independent, Rivne became the administrative center of Rivne Oblast. Today, it is an important cultural, educational, industrial, and transportation center of western Ukraine.
