Bauchi

Bauchi is the capital city of Bauchi State in northeastern Nigeria, founded in 1809 by Yakubu, one of the commanders of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio during the Fulani jihad. The city's name originates from a hunter named Baushe, who advised Yakubu to build his settlement west of the Warinje mountain. In gratitude, Yakubu promised to name the town after the hunter. He constructed defensive walls around the settlement measuring 10.5 kilometers in circumference, establishing Bauchi as a powerful political center within the Sokoto Caliphate. Notably, Yakubu was the only non-Fulani flag-bearer appointed by the caliphate.

British forces occupied Bauchi in 1902, deposing Emir Umaru and incorporating the emirate into the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. The arrival of the railway in 1961 transformed the city into a major collecting point for groundnuts, cotton, and other agricultural commodities. When Bauchi State was created in 1976, the city became the capital of the new state. The city also serves as the final resting place of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first and only prime minister.

Today, Bauchi has an estimated population of around 500,000 people within an urban area of approximately 90 square kilometers. The city is home to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and a Federal Polytechnic, alongside industries including an asbestos factory and a meat-processing plant. Tourists are drawn to the nearby Yankari National Park, located 110 kilometers away, which features wildlife and warm springs. Modern highways and railways connect Bauchi to Jos, Kano, and Maiduguri, maintaining its status as a vital transport and economic hub in the northeast.
