Benin City

Benin City, also known as Edo, is the capital and largest city of Edo State in southern Nigeria, with origins stretching back to around the 10th century when the Edo people first settled the area. Between the 13th and 19th centuries it flourished as the principal city of the Kingdom of Benin, renowned for sophisticated bronze casting, ivory carving, and the construction of massive earthworks and moats that ranked among the largest in the world. The Oba of Benin ruled as a divine monarch, and under leaders such as Oba Ewuare the Great the city became a major political and cultural power in West Africa.

In 1897 a British punitive expedition attacked Benin City after several of their soldiers were killed during a diplomatic mission, looting its famous bronzes and burning much of the city. The kingdom was subsequently incorporated into British Nigeria. Following Nigeria's independence in 1960, Benin City regained prominence as the capital of the Midwestern Region, later Bendel State, and finally Edo State from 1991. The University of Benin was founded in 1967, establishing the city as an academic center of national importance.

Today Benin City has an estimated population of around two million people spread across an area of approximately 1,204 square kilometers. It is the fourth-largest city in Nigeria and the center of the country's rubber industry, with significant production of palm oil and palm kernels. Historic sites such as the Palace of the Oba and the ancient Benin Moat continue to draw visitors. Benin City remains one of Nigeria's most historically significant and economically vibrant urban centers.
