Warri is an important city in Delta State, south-western Nigeria. It was founded in the 15th century as the capital of the Itsekiri Kingdom. The city sits on the Atlantic coast, which allowed it to become a trading hub between European nations and the interior regions. In the 19th century, Warri became known for palm-oil and petroleum commerce.
During colonial rule, Britain established Warri Province as an administrative district. After independence, the city grew into an oil-industry centre for the south-western region. Major oil companies such as Shell and Chevron operate facilities in Warri.
Today Warri has a population of over 800,000 and is home to diverse communities — Itsekiri, Urhobo, Ijaw and Isoko. The city has an airport and seaports, and remains significant as an economic and cultural centre.
