Bonny is a historic coastal town and island located in Rivers State, southeastern Nigeria. The area was originally settled by the Ibani people, an Ijaw subgroup, who established the Kingdom of Bonny in the 14th century AD. The settlement's original name was Okoloama, meaning "town of curlews," named after the birds that once filled the island. By the 15th century, Portuguese explorers had arrived, and Bonny evolved into one of the largest slave-exporting depots on the West African coast. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, under the Pepple dynasty, the kingdom reached the height of its power and influence. In 1886, the British signed a protectorate treaty with Bonny, and in 1917 the town was formally designated a township under colonial ordinance.
After Britain abolished the transatlantic slave trade in 1807, Bonny shifted its economy toward the export of palm oil and palm kernels, remaining a vital port until 1916 when it was overshadowed by the new railroad terminus at Port Harcourt. The town's fortunes revived in the late 1950s with the onset of oil exploration in the Niger Delta. Today, Bonny Island hosts the Bonny Crude Oil Terminal, which handles roughly 30 percent of Nigeria's oil exports, as well as the Nigeria LNG plant—one of the largest liquefied natural gas facilities in Africa. The island also accommodates an LPG plant and several major petroleum installations. Despite industrialization, the traditional Bonny Kingdom persists, led by the Amayanabo, who maintains the cultural heritage of the people.
Presently, the Bonny Local Government Area has an estimated population of about 309,200 and covers 646 square kilometres. The town features an Anglican cathedral built in 1889, a government health center, and a local coconut and coir industry. The region produces the high-grade Bonny Light crude, making the town a cornerstone of Nigeria's petroleum economy. Although oil operations have brought environmental challenges, Bonny remains a significant cultural and economic center in the Niger Delta region.
