Biu is a town in southeastern Borno State, Nigeria. It was established around 1670 as the capital of the Biu Kingdom, founded under King Mari Watila Tampta. The Biu Kingdom remained independent until the colonial era and frequently clashed with the surrounding Bornu Empire. The town is surrounded by scenic hills that historically provided natural defence against enemy raids.
During British rule, Biu was established as a district within the Bornu Emirate. After independence in 1960, Biu continued to serve as an agricultural and cultural centre for the region. The area is known for its crop-processing industries and livestock trading.
Today Biu still holds importance as a cultural centre for the Bura and Margi peoples. The town covers a large land area, and the surrounding districts are renowned for peanut, sorghum and tomato cultivation. The town also hosts a government college and a general hospital.
