Kherson was founded in 1778 as a port and naval city in southern Ukraine. Its establishment was connected with the development of the Black Sea Fleet and the expansion of settlements along the lower Dnipro. Its position near the river and the Black Sea allowed Kherson to develop rapidly as a center of shipbuilding, trade, and maritime transport.
During the 19th century, the city grew into an important commercial and industrial center of the southern region. Grain, timber, and other goods were shipped through its port to international markets. Shipbuilding, processing industries, transport, and urban infrastructure expanded, strengthening Kherson's role as a link between inland Ukraine and the Black Sea ports.
The 20th century brought revolutions, wars, occupation, and major economic changes. During World War II, Kherson was occupied by German forces and later rebuilt. After Ukraine became independent, the city retained its importance as a river and maritime center in the south. Today, Kherson is associated with its port heritage, shipbuilding traditions, and distinctive location along the lower Dnipro.
